Many of you may be working from home for the first time. I thought it may be helpful to get some tips on staying productive while working from home and what’s worked for me. You may end up finding that working from home is way more productive and relaxing than you think. Here are 5 tips to get you started in creating your own routine.

1) Wake up early

Just because you’re working from home doesn’t mean the days are getting longer. Keep your regular schedule if you workout in the morning, make sure you’re keeping it up or taking a brisk morning walk. Whatever it is, wake up as if you were heading into the office to keep your routine. We are doing this with the kids at home as well, making sure they get up and get clothes on to get the day started.

2) Get dressed for work or at least casual Friday

There is no reason to look like a slob or work in pajamas. Not getting dressed may cause drowsiness and you not to feel up to the task. Freshen up, put some clothes that you can be seen on, do your hair/wash your face and get ready for a productive workday.

3) Have a good breakfast

Make sure your body is fueled for the day. I stress this only because when you’re at home you feel like you have the pantry and fridge at your fingertips. This is no time to start binge eating or bored snacking. Have your regular breakfast and plan your lunch, just like you would at work.

4) Work in a separate workspace w/working hours

Try to set a separate workspace than your living space. This will create a better relaxation scenario when you’re not working. I have a separate room with a door, but even if it’s a particular section of your place, create a bookshelf barrier or grab one of those kabuki screens to separate your space. It makes the world of difference when you’re ready to unwind. Also, set working hours of when I’m “on”. The harder part is being “off”, but when you’re off, actually be off. The great thing about working from home is that you have everything you need at your fingertips if there really is an emergency, so set it aside and rest easier.

5) Take (walking) breaks

Working from home can begin to feel isolated pretty quickly. If you’re feeling skittish, my immediate advice is to take a lap outside around the neighborhood. It fuels the need for movement, gives you fresh air and you may get a little neighborhood interaction that you’ll be missing from being away from the office.

This may seem easy enough but it is important to set boundaries when you are working from home to give your mind the separation it needs of work and home to be as productive as possible. Check out these Work From Home essentials that I have on-hand in my “office”:
